Jacques Fabrice Vallée (born September 24, 1939 in Pontoise, Val-d'Oise, France) is a venture capitalist, computer scientist, author, ufologist and former astronomer currently residing in San Francisco, California.




In mainstream science, Vallée is notable for co-developing the first computerized mapping of Mars for NASA and for his work at SRI International in creating ARPANET, a precursor to the modern Internet. Vallée is also an important figure in the study of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), first noted for a defense of the scientific legitimacy of the extraterrestrial hypothesis and later for promoting the interdimensional hypothesis.

Vallée was born in Pontoise, France. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the Sorbonne, followed by his Master of Science in astrophysics from the University of Lille. He began his professional life as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in 1961. He was awarded the Jules Verne Prize for his first science-fiction novel in French.



He moved to the United States in 1962 and began working in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin, at whose MacDonald Observatory he worked on NASA's first project making a detailed informational map of Mars.



In 1967, Vallée received a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University. While at the Institute for the Future from 1972 to 1976 he was a principal investigator on the large NSF project for computer networking, which developed one of the first conferencing systems, Planning Network (PLANET),[1] on the ARPANET many years before the Internet was formed.



He has also served on the National Advisory Committee of the University of Michigan College of Engineering and was involved in early work on artificial intelligence.



Vallée has authored four books on high technology, including Computer Message Systems, Electronic Meetings, The Network Revolution, and The Heart of the Internet.



Along with his mentor, astronomer J. Allen Hynek, Vallée carefully studied the phenomenon of UFOs for many years and served as the real-life model for the character portrayed by François Truffaut in Steven Spielberg’s film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.[citation needed]



His research has taken him to countries all over the world. Considered[by whom?] one of the leading experts in UFO phenomena, Vallée has written several scientific books on the subject.



His current endeavours include his involvement in SBV Ventures[2] a venture capital fund as a general partner. He and the other general partner, Graham Burnette[3] on SBV are also in the early stages of launching a second venture capital fund.



He is married and has two children.

As a general partner in these funds, he has spearheaded early-stage investments in over 60 startup companies, 18 of which have become traded on the public markets, either through IPOs or acquisitions. [edit] UFO research and academic workIn May 1955, Vallée first sighted an unidentified flying object over his Pontoise home. Six years later in 1961, while working on the staff of the French Space Committee, Vallée witnessed the destruction of the tracking tapes of an unknown object orbiting the earth. The particular object was a retrograde satellite – that is, a satellite orbiting the earth in the opposite direction to the earth's rotation. At the time he observed this, there were no rockets powerful enough to launch such a satellite, so the team was quite excited as they assumed that the Earth's gravity had captured a natural satellite (asteroid). A superior came and erased the tape. These events contributed to Vallée's long-standing interest in the UFO phenomenon.



In the mid-1960s, like many other UFO researchers, Vallée initially attempted to validate the popular Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (or ETH). Leading UFO researcher Jerome Clark[4] argues that Vallée's first two UFO books were among the most scientifically sophisticated defenses of the ETH ever mounted.



However, by 1969, Vallée's conclusions had changed, and he publicly stated that the ETH was too narrow and ignored too much data. Vallée began exploring the commonalities between UFOs, cults, religious movements, demons, angels, ghosts, cryptid sightings, and psychic phenomena. Speculation about these potential links were first detailed in Vallée's third UFO book, Passport to Magonia: From Folklore to Flying Saucers.



As an alternative to the extraterrestrial visitation hypothesis, Vallée has suggested a multidimensional visitation hypothesis. This hypothesis represents an extension of the ETH where the alleged extraterrestrials could be potentially from anywhere. The entities could be multidimensional beyond space-time, and thus could coexist with humans, yet remain undetected.



Vallée's opposition to the popular ETH hypothesis was not well received by prominent U.S. ufologists, hence he was viewed as something of an outcast. Indeed, Vallée refers to himself as a "heretic among heretics".



Vallée's opposition to the ETH theory is summarised in his paper, "Five Arguments Against the Extraterrestrial Origin of Unidentified Flying Objects", Journal of Scientific Exploration, 1990:



Scientific opinion has generally followed public opinion in the belief that unidentified flying objects either do not exist (the "natural phenomena hypothesis") or, if they do, must represent evidence of a visitation by some advanced race of space travellers (the extraterrestrial hypothesis or "ETH"). It is the view of the author that research on UFOs need not be restricted to these two alternatives. On the contrary, the accumulated data base exhibits several patterns tending to indicate that UFOs are real, represent a previously unrecognized phenomenon, and that the facts do not support the common concept of "space visitors." Five specific arguments articulated here contradict the ETH:



1.unexplained close encounters are far more numerous than required for any physical survey of the earth;

2.the humanoid body structure of the alleged "aliens" is not likely to have originated on another planet and is not biologically adapted to space travel;

3.the reported behavior in thousands of abduction reports contradicts the hypothesis of genetic or scientific experimentation on humans by an advanced race;

4.the extension of the phenomenon throughout recorded human history demonstrates that UFOs are not a contemporary phenomenon; and

5.the apparent ability of UFOs to manipulate space and time suggests radically different and richer alternatives.

Vallée has contributed to the investigation of the Miracle at Fatima and Marian apparitions. His work has been used to support the Fatima UFO Hypothesis. Vallée is one of the first people to speculate publicly about the possibility that the "solar dance" at Fatima was a UFO. The idea of UFOs was not unknown in 1917, but most of the people in attendance at the Fatima apparitions would not have attributed the claimed phenomena there to UFOs, let alone to extraterrestrials. Vallée has also speculated about the possibility that other religious apparitions may have been the result of UFO activity including Our Lady of Lourdes and the revelations to Joseph Smith. Vallée and other researchers have advocated further study of unusual phenomena in the academic community. They don't believe that this should be handled solely by theologians.[5][6][7]



[edit] Film appearanceIn the Steven Spielberg film Close Encounters of the Third Kind Vallée served as the model for the French researcher character, Lacombe (François Truffaut).[8]



In 1979, Robert Emenegger and Alan Sandler updated their 1974 UFOs, Past, Present and Future documentary with new 1979 footage narrated by Jacques Vallée. The updated version is entitled "UFOs: It Has Begun".



Jacques Vallée attempted to interest Spielberg in an alternative explanation for the phenomenon. In an interview on Conspire.com, Vallée said, "I argued with him that the subject was even more interesting if it wasn't extraterrestrials. If it was real, physical, but not ET. So he said, 'You're probably right, but that's not what the public is expecting — this is Hollywood and I want to give people something that's close to what they expect.'"[9]



[edit] Interpretation of the UFO evidenceVallée proposes that there is a genuine UFO phenomenon, partly associated with a form of non-human consciousness that manipulates space and time. The phenomenon has been active throughout human history, and seems to masquerade in various forms to different cultures. In his opinion, the intelligence behind the phenomenon attempts social manipulation by using deception on the humans with whom they interact.



Vallée also proposes that a secondary aspect of the UFO phenomenon involves human manipulation by humans. Witnesses of UFO phenomena undergo a manipulative and staged spectacle, meant to alter their belief system, and eventually, influence human society by suggesting alien intervention from outer space. The ultimate motivation for this deception is probably a projected major change of human society, the breaking down of old belief systems and the implementation of new ones. Vallée states that the evidence, if carefully analysed, suggests an underlying plan for the deception of mankind by means of unknown, highly advanced methods. Vallee states that it is highly unlikely that governments actually conceal alien evidence, as the popular myth suggests. Rather, it is much more likely that that is exactly what the manipulators want us to believe. Vallée feels the entire subject of UFOs is mystified by charlatans and science fiction. He advocates a stronger and more serious involvement of science in the UFO research and debate.[citation needed] Only this can reveal the true nature of the UFO phenomenon.



[edit] View of UFO investigative effortsVallée is often highly critical of UFO investigators overall, both believers and skeptics, asserting that what often passes for an acceptable level of investigation in a UFO context would be considered sloppy and seriously inadequate investigation in other fields. He has pointed out logical flaws and methodological flaws common in such research. Unlike many critics of UFO investigative efforts, his critiques are not condescending and dismissive and he indicates that he is simply interested in good science.[citation needed]



[edit] Concerns regarding the UFO subcultureVallée expresses concern about the often authoritarian political and religious views expressed by many contactees. Amongst the groups profiled are the nascent Raëlian movement and an early form of the Heaven's Gate suicide cult, against which Vallée prophetically warned potential converts, "you only risk your life!" He also argues that Scientology is another example of a UFO cult which has organized itself as a religious organization.[citation needed]

The interdimensional hypothesis (IDH or IH), also called the extradimensional hypothesis (EDH), is an advanced theory by Jacques Vallée that says unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and related events involve visitations from other "realities" or "dimensions" that coexist separately alongside our own. It is an alternative to the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH).[1][2][3][4]




IDH also holds that UFOs are a modern manifestation of a phenomenon that has occurred throughout recorded human history, which in prior ages were ascribed to mythological or supernatural creatures.[2]



Although ETH has remained the predominant explanation for UFOs by UFOlogists,[5] some ufologists have abandoned it in favor of IDH. Paranormal researcher Brad Steiger wrote that "we are dealing with a multidimensional paraphysical phenomenon that is largely indigenous to planet Earth".[6] Other UFOlogists, such as John Ankerberg and John Weldon, advocate IDH because it fits the explanation of UFOs as a spiritistic phenomenon. Commenting on the disparity between the ETH and the accounts that people have made of UFO encounters, Ankerberg and Weldon wrote "the UFO phenomenon simply does not behave like extraterrestrial visitors."[1][7] In the book UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse published in 1970, John Keel linked UFOs to supernatural concepts such as ghosts and demons.



Also Jerome Clark was influenced by IDH but then he rejected this hypothesis and argued very cautiously in favor of the extraterrestrial hypothesis



The development of IDH as an alternative to ETH increased in the 1970s and 1980s with the publication of books by Vallée and J. Allen Hynek. In 1975, Vallée and Hynek advocated the hypothesis in The Edge of Reality: A Progress Report on Unidentified Flying Objects and further, in Vallée's 1979 book Messengers of Deception: UFO Contacts and Cults.[8]



Some UFO proponents accepted IDH because the distance between stars makes interstellar travel impractical using conventional means and nobody had demonstrated an antigravity or faster-than-light travel hypothesis that could explain extraterrestrial machines.[citation needed] With IDH, it is unnecessary to explain any propulsion method because the IDH holds that UFOs are not spacecraft, but rather devices that travel between different realities.[9]



One advantage of IDH proffered by Hilary Evans is its ability to explain the apparent ability of UFOs to appear and disappear from sight and radar; this is explained as the UFO entering and leaving our dimension ("materializing" and "dematerializing"). Moreover, Evans argues that if the other dimension is slightly more advanced than ours, or is our own future, this would explain the UFOs' tendency to represent near future technologies (airships in the 1890s, rockets and supersonic travel in the 1940s, etc.)[10]



IDH is considered a belief system rather than a scientific hypothesis because it is not falsifiable through testing and experiment. Unlike ETH, it is not possible to verify IDH by experiment or by observation because there is no way to detect the alternative theories it postulates. IDH is evaluated by UFOlogists solely on the basis of how well it fits.[1]



IDH has been a causative factor in establishing UFO religion.[1]

We conventionally call ‘psycho-creatures’ all those intelligences that, following a certain esoteric terminology, distinguish themselves as:



• Divinities

• Egregors

• Guardians, angels and angelicity

• Demons

• Energized thought forms and subtle creatures (or extra-dimensional beings that manifest in

the same manner)

• Disincarnate presences and helpers

• Planetary spirits, elementals and those of nature

• Larvae and ‘shells’ or phantoms.



All these entities make up a complex multi-dimensional and spiritual ecosystem, as well as the energy food chain in which we are immersed and participate regardless of whether we are aware of it or not.



In general terms we can say that each one of these:



• Originates from a human aspect or from a personal a/o collective human projection

• Represents more or less active and intelligent ‘information’

• Superimposes itself or presides over an energetic/physical field, influencing its dynamics at various levels

• Nourishes itself on vital a/o psychic a/o spiritual energy

• Can enter into communication with the human being for different reasons and in different ways

• Its manifestation can determine itself or be determined with great holographic versatility, influenced by the thought and suggestions that are applied to it.



Every psycho-creature contains and manages forces of a lower level, directing events in order to safeguard the territory from which it receives the energetic nourishment used for its own maintenance and development. The most complex entities ‘know’ how to cultivate their own resources by creating a suitable spiritual and subtle habitat, more or less in symbiosis with the human being and its evolution. The entities of a lower level often create a parasitic relationship with the energies or Form with which they enter into contact.



The human being is part of this spiritual eco-system and, as a bridge-Form, should be its evolved interpreter in relation to the material world.



If we are living in an eco-system, it is normal that beings from many other dimensions enter into contact with us or even make ‘use’ of us. According to esoteric tradition, extra a/o multi-dimensional Forms exist and continuously interact with us even though we do not realize it.



Perhaps in a previous phase of evolutionary human immaturity these entities – of different orders and degree – might have eventually constituted a scale of values towards the Real and Consciousness. Today, however, the psychic, astral, subtle or divine planes, as we often call them, are populated by entities that have absolved themselves of their function and now cloud and distance the human being from his essence and the reality of things, be they devils, spirits, angels or ‘God’.



The time is right. We need to proceed with a change in consciousness, to purify, liberate and acknowledge that which lies in each one of us: our most profound Essence.



Incidentally, from this point of view ufological phenomenon and contactism can be considered part of a much wider scenario of the esoteric sciences or of those disciplines that study the link between our inner and outer worlds. There is no real demarcation between our consciousness and the object perceived by it. In the evaluation of UFO phenomena, extraterrestrials and aliens, and certainly before we push ourselves to classify races and draw conclusions as to their ‘agendas’, we have to establish if these entities are connected to ‘alternative realities’.



The ufologist and classic contactee do not usually concern themselves with this.

Even less so the abductee [1], with good reason, if acting on good faith with interpretations of phenomena (because here we are only talking about interpretations) that insist on terrifying scenarios. They exclude – perhaps because they do not know – keys to reading that take into account vaster perspectives. For example the disciplines of trans-humanistic psychology, esoteric physics, the anthropology of the sacred and in the final analysis, reality and consciousness.



The UFO phenomenon seems to interact with the collective psyche and if the collective psyche ‘takes on’ certain forms, it might well take on those forms that make themselves available. If at a collective level we were to modify such a paradigm, we could verify if such phenomena assume different connotations just as physics theorizes on how phenomena behave according to the conditions of observation.



UFOs – the genuine manifestations – appear when they find the right psychic contents that will give shape to them, including solid form.

I know that it seems simplistic to reduce them to manifestations of consciousness but in the current context it helps if we consider other mechanisms from a higher level of observation.



For now, though, let’s limit ourselves and begin with the idea that we are talking about a Form which is given energy that is part of an aspect of reality we have yet to discover.



The UFO phenomena represents a window on the beyond and also encourages us to investigate just how much is alien inside of us or at least to recognize how tightly we are bound to what we have been taught to believe the world is all about.



Adopting a dualistic scheme (good-evil), reality assumes those self-same connotations. The forces of evil perceived as real and hostile and perhaps also materialized through UFO phenomena, could in reality be entities generated and nourished by us. They could be an effect of human behaviour that has lasted for millennia and not the historical cause of our status [2].



The awakening has to begin from inside of us. It is we who lend ourselves to games of illusion, deceit and pillage. There are many political, social, religious and cultural realities that tend to perpetuate what is a mechanism of energetic ‘vampirism’. This is certainly one of the causes of Evil and it has been generated by Mankind itself. Continuing to perceive reality in terms of a good-evil dualism results in modifying the structure of what is real. We are capable of creating all the hells and paradises that we want. If we leave behind the idea of sin, the devil, the messiah and the enemy or the sheep-shepherd-wolf paradigm and the need to be continually reassured and saved (concepts of the Judaic-Christian matrix that have distorted the values of the New Age itself), the phenomenon would probably change



A metaphysical hypothesis with regard to the UFO phenomenon has already been explored by Carl G. Jung. In fact the pioneer of psychology often concerned himself with the UFO phenomenon in his writings and in particular in his celebrated essay A Modern Myth: the things that one sees in the sky, interpreting them as unconscious psychic representations linked to collectively relevant events.

After Jung, the scientist Jacques Vallée, who worked as an astronomer and collaborator with NASA in the 1970’s took up the theme again but was fiercely opposed by the international ufological community. Its researchers were relentless in their desire to give the phenomenon – be it physical or psychic – a connotation of an interference that is somewhat ‘other’ in respect to our reality, preferring to place it on the physical rather than para-physical plane.



Nevertheless, in that same period, psychedelic experiences – the main interest of neuro-physicians, anthropologists, botanists and a plethora of ‘flower children’ (the roles often coincided!) - later brought to the attention of a wider public by Carlos Casteneda [3], seem to give serious credit to a far from simple interpretation of the question.



We should also not exclude the effect on reality a/o the psyche provoked by experiments with time and holographic technology, whether they be of this world or another.



Terence McKenna, in True Hallucinations, affirms with great optimism that: «… The UFO is a reflection of a future event that promises humanity’s eventual mastery over time, space and matter.[…] I am even more convinced that the answer to all of these mysteries that shake our classic view of the world is to be understood by looking inside ourselves.[…] The paths of the heart lead to nearby universes, full of life and benevolent feelings towards humanity. »



I feel it is important not to underestimate the para-physical (and esoteric [4]) interpretation of a phenomenon, that is certainly and undeniably becoming more ‘frequent’, in the search for the key to its manifestation.



The universe is a product of our consciousness and a projection of our senses: we are at one with the Absolute which, for some reason, presents itself in the form of different frequencies of energy and consciousness. They relate to one another and create, in our case, the image that constitutes our plane of existence and which appears to be three-dimensional and oriented in uni-directional time.



According to some, we (and our lives) are Maya, illusion, as portrayed in the film ‘Matrix’; according to others however, doubt cannot be cast upon our existence or at least our form of existence, which is significant in itself.



Reality could be positioned somewhere in between: we find ourselves in an illusion (and it is always good to remember that) which is nevertheless our reality (so we cannot possibly deny it).



All things considered it is better to not be hasty in drawing conclusions about the UFO phenomenon and the nature of ‘alien’ interference or even pretend to have definitively understood its nature or intentions (or ‘agenda’). The origin of such interference is not yet clear and definitive, just as the nature of the reality that we define as ‘physical’ and ‘material’ is not yet clear, especially when related to the dynamics of our psyche. And as William Shakespeare so aptly says in Hamlet, “There are more things in heaven and earth Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”



We ourselves can be said to exist on a certain plane of existence, which is manifested and projected through dynamics that are not yet completely decoded. This ‘existing’ is nevertheless confined inside rather limited parameters and our current existence will in all probability result as being fictitious when compared in a broader sense.



Those wider parameters could relate to our nature which is likewise much more expansive than we realize and what is currently considered as supernatural or alien could, on another level, be the natural expression of reality and ourselves.



Our existence is played out in a sensorial circuit that we need to control and decrypt in order to give reality a chrism of truthfulness despite the fact that our senses are vibrating and testing that reality on the same frequencies. Although our senses give us the sensation of reality in all its physicality, it is only equivalent to its existential ‘plane’.



We are living at a historical moment in which culture and values are being re-examined and the same esoteric dimensions are being mixed together to reformulate a concept of reality: in this sense we are perhaps on the threshold of great changes.



We will go into the themes inherent in parallel worlds and the ‘separation of the planes’ in Appendix II. It is increasingly obvious that the certainties of our global village which have been consolidated up to now, be they material or spiritual, are disintegrating and re-organizing according to potential schemes that could take off in many different directions [5].

Psychic Encounters of a Friend.

Since 1980, or thereabouts I used to know an Australian friend. I will call him by his first name which is Chris. He is somewhat eccentric. He used to, and still does collect rubbish. He is a great believer in "recycling" where possible.
Anyway, when I first met him he was well-dressed, and had a thin elderly Indian friend who referred to himself as the Universalist, or words to that effect. The latter claimed he could not see in one eye due to an operation by a "fake doctor" as he put it. He lived with some Muslims which he did not like as he recalled the appalling smell of spiced meat ascending from their kitchen (An unpleasant experience which I had as I, like him am vegetarian, and the way the meat smelt was frankly horrible!). He also like Chris used to give me free things notably food. He was a very kind soul, and I expect he no longer physically exists.
To return to Chris per se. Back in July 1997 he had an "extraordinary" experience. It occured very late at night. He was in Langley Memorial Park, and was staring at what might be termed a "UFO". It was erractically circling anti-clockwise a "star", or "planet" which was gradually moving across the sky. Chris described the "craft" as being red, and triangular with a flashing light on it. He stood transfixed by it for sometime. Then, the "UFO" slowly descended towards him, and then, shone a light at him. This "light" seemed to make Chris very peaceful, and unafraid. It was also trying to make him fall asleep as it was now very early morning. As the "light" and "craft" descended more, and more towards him he suddenly took fright, and dashed off to his friends house which was nearby.He feared that he might be abducted...
I questioned Chris on a number of times about the above, and he always came up with the same story without any elaboration. Attempts were even made to try, and trace independent witnesses who may have seen the same thing but to no avail.A week, or so after all this I had my own personal "UFO" experience. I saw something late at night which was suprising. Whether it was something genuine is quite another matter. Anyway, I saw two "UFOs" going around the moon! Then, they both went off in different directions, and were seen no more. Their appearance tallied with the description given by Chris.
In the late 1990s I was for whatever reason fascinated by the alleged UFO phenomena. Most sightings ofcourse turn out to have a rational explanation. At this time there were a number of glossy magazines on the subject, and one of them I came across mentioned the experience of electricity in the air when a "sighting" was made. This apparently was the case with Chris. Personally, I do not believe that his experience was objectively real in the "physical" sense. It was simply an "opening" into a psychic reality which only Chris could experience. The same I feel is true about my own experience. Ofcourse, critics would dismiss this all as merely a form of hallucination. In a sense, this is true at a deeper level of understanding.
What amused me was that Chris came up with another "story". He said that one night he was walking in Tescos car park...and was being followed by a "UFO" up in the sky. Every time he stopped to look round the "craft" would suddenly stop! As I explained to Chris most "UFOs" are really psychic phenomena as the evidence clearly indicates. For example, so-called alien abuductions can involve people being taken through the walls of their home suggesting that it is form of lucid dreaming, or out-of-body experience.
Among other things, Chris had an interest in spiritualism. He once told me that he went to a seance in Langley. The use of Quija Board was the order of the day...or rather the night!! In it he mentioned how he felt a power move the glass to spell out a message from the "Spirit World". Nothing as far I known went seriously untoward even though I recall listening to a phone-in programme in which hundreds of people complained about their experiences with the Quija Board.
Chris used to, or still has a married lady friend called B. He stayed with her at her mothers home in Norfolk. There, they both experienced mild forms of poltergeist activity. It was claimed that Bs late brother was trying to attract attention so to speak! Apparently, he was very attached to his mother. However, when the latter died the poltergeist activity suddenly stopped. The late brother was at last reunited with his late mother!!
Another lady friend of Chris was someone who was into vampires. She even tried to draw blood from him with a knife so that she could suck it out!
In many respects, Chris is not the ideal witness of alleged phenomena. But that does not mean he is exagerating, or fibbing. On the contrary, he comes across as someone who is very pleasant,trusting,transparent, but "gullible". For example, he seems to naively regard everything about the "power" of "magic rituals" found in books notably published by Finbarr as "gospel truth"
